A Comparison of PVC vs Resin Statues

A Beginner's Guide to the Differences Between PVC and Resin Statues!

One of the questions that we frequently receive from new fans and collectors relates to the differences between the materials utilized for our two types of statues: resin and PVC. To help clarify, we’ve created this article breaking down many of the primary differences between these two very different types of materials and production processes!

Our PVC statues are made of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), a low-weight and high-quality plastic commonly used in mass production for toys and many kinds of household goods. PVC is the ideal material to use for creating low-priced, smaller statues that don’t require hand-painted detailing. PVC statues are also faster to produce on the production line and are generally extremely durable to impact since they are made of plastic.

However, the cost of the steel tooling necessary to produce a PVC statue is extraordinarily expensive, necessitating around at least ten thousand units of a PVC statue to be sold just to pay for the cost of the tooling. For this reason, only extremely popular main characters (and not niche supporting characters) are usually practical to produce in this form.

On the other hand, it is possible to produce characters with a smaller fan base in polystone resin statue form, as the tooling costs are much lower for resin statues. That said, the cost to the consumer is higher because resin statues require expert hand-painting techniques by skilled painters, are far more limited than PVC statues and take much longer for factories to produce.

Our resin statues are made of polystone resin, a hard stone-like material that is created by mixing liquid resin with stone powder. Polystone resin is much heavier than PVC, and is more resistant to heat. In addition, polystone resin statues are more efficiently able to be produced in much larger sizes and with greater amounts of sculpted and painted details than a PVC statue, and are less likely to have seam lines such as the ones created by PVC molding.

Both types of statues have their pros and cons, and neither kind is overall superior to the other. For this reason, there are countless fans who prefer one type to the other and also countless fans who collect both resin and PVC statues. In the end, both varieties are able to create figures and statues that are visually amazing, high-quality pieces.
