Unlike most of the popular anime titles of today that originated as mangas, Sword Art Online's alpha was as a web novel on Reki Kawahara's website from 2002 to 2008 and was later serialized into light novels beginning April 2009 onwards on ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko. The series currently has twelve manga adaptations, and its anime adaptation is currently on its third season. The story dwells on the concept of virtual reality (VR) and concentrates on the lead characters' explorations in the VR-generated massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

Apart from the brilliant animation and admirable score, critics are also applauding the in-depth perspective of a player's existentialism in a VR and MMORPG setting and the phenomena surrounding. As such, the series has seen commercial success across the board and has sold over 20 million prints as of 2017. Though exhilarating to read and watch, the incorporation of something of intellect is a breath of fresh air that is highly appreciated in this day and age.
