Developed by Sonic Team and published by SEGA for the SEGA Dreamcast, the action-puzzle game ChuChu Rocket! was the first Dreamcast video game that supported online console gaming. It was the second game Sonic Team developed for the Dreamcast, following Sonic Adventure. Knowledge regarding network gaming acquired while working on ChuChu Rocket! also helped Sonic Team with the development of Phantasy Star Online.

The basic premise in ChuChu Rocket! is that mice (called “ChuChus”) living on a spaceport begin to panic and run around chaotically when their home is suddenly invaded by cats (called “KapuKapu”). Players must place arrows onto the checkerboard tiles of each level to guide the ChuChus to their rockets to escape before they are caught and eaten by the KapuKapus.

In addition to the single-player puzzle mode, numerous other modes are available, including competitive multiplayer modes that support up to four players, a cooperative challenge mode where players work together, and even a puzzle editing mode where players can create their own puzzles for other players to try to solve.

ChuChu Rocket! was a success both critically and commercially. The game was praised by critics for its aesthetic and frenetic multiplayer modes. In 2003, ChuChu Rocket! gained even more attention when it was released as a Gameboy Advance launch title and was the first SEGA game ever published for Nintendo hardware.
