Payday: The Heist is a cooperative first-person shooter developed by Overkill Software and published by Daybreak Game Company. It was released in 2011 for the PlayStation 3 and Windows (via Steam). You play as one of four gang members in an attempt to pull off criminal activities such as bank robbery, kidnapping, and theft to name a few. Hostage-taking, in particular, is quite an interesting mechanic because the hostages serve as an extra life. Every time a team member is about to be arrested, you may use a hostage to trade places with your allies.

There are seven missions in total (including the one from the free No Mercy DLC), and the repayability of each is vast. The game is programmed in a way that a variable of things may differ during each playthrough, an example of which is the location of key characters you need to search for. The Wolf Pack DLC, released in 2012, introduced two new heists, additional weapons, and a skill tree system.

A sequel entitled Payday 2 was released in 2013. As of November 2014, both games combined sold over 9 million copies worldwide.
