Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a magical girl anime TV series created by Magica Quartet and animated by the studio Shaft. The genre of this supernatural series is part dark fantasy and part psychological thriller. The series contains copious amounts of blood and violence, which sets it apart from typical magical girl anime series.

The plot of Puella Magi Madoka Magic centers on a group of adolescent girls who gain powers and become magical girls by forging contracts with Kyubey, a cat-like alien creature. Kyubey is able to grant any wish that a girl wants, on the condition that that girl must fight witches as a super-powered magical girl. Through the course of the series, they discover the responsibilities of being magical girls and its dark implications on their lives.

The 2011 anime series received widespread critical praise and was nominated for (and won) many awards. Puella Magi Madoka Magica was so successful that it has spawned a dozen manga series (including an adaptation), an anime film series, and even several video games.
